There are five coloured manas in Magic: The Gathering: Red, Blue, Green, White and Black. The colour black is often avoided by players who are new to MTG. It embodies the idea of getting rich quickly or dying in the process, and is not particularly geared towards the building of resources, which may make inexperienced players a little apprehensive.
However, black cards are some of the most powerful that you will find in the game. They are able to achieve great results with almost any card if you’re willing to sacrifice life points, creatures’ resources, and other cards.
There are 27 different black Planeswalkers in the game, each offering a range of different skills and abilities that combine to make a deck to be reckoned with.
Here’s a snapshot of some of the black Planeswalkers you may want to pick for your ultimate black deck.
Davriel Cane
A simple man, Davriel Cane is someone who enjoys life's simple pleasures: wealth, luxury, and fine tea! He also happens to be an incredibly talented diabolist; he is skilled when it comes to binding demons to his service. He loathes playing the hero, but this is a role he often finds himself in no matter how hard he tries to avoid it
Liliana Vess
Liliana Vess is a master necromancer who commands the dead whilst manipulating the living in order to achieve her own ends. She is ambitious, cunning, and above all else incredibly confident. The game she plays is a dangerous one that centres around shifting loyalties. She aligns herself with anyone who offers her the surest path when it comes to fulfilling her desires.
Vraska
Vraska is a gorgon who has spent most of her life as an outcast. The abuse and discrimination that she was subjected to in her youth shaped her into a revolutionary who is dedicated to overthrow unjust systems and also level the playing field for those who are downtrodden. She is a formidable physical fighter who is capable of petrifying her enemies with a single glance. She leads the Golgari guild towards a better future using whatever means she can.

Ob Nixilis
As a human, Ob Nixilis was a warlord who had an obsession with conquest. In the pursuit of power, he was transformed into a demon by an ancient magical artifact. Initially, he sought to remove the curse, however he eventually reached the point where he embraced his new form and the power that it gave to him. Although over the course of his long life he has conquered many worlds, he is someone who grows bored quickly and often finds himself looking for a new conquest. Ob Nixilis wields deadly magic that can sap his enemy’s life force in order to enhance his own abilities. This is just another way in which he claims dominion over others.
Sorin Markov
Sorin Markov is one of the oldest surviving Planeswalkers in the Multiverse and a powerful vampire. He was born over 7,000 years ago and has lorded it over his home plane of Innistrad for millennia. He preserves a balance between humanity and the monsters who prey on them. Whilst he is often arrogant and at times cruel, Sorin feels an unwavering sense of responsibility when it comes to the Multiverse that has driven him to be a protector of many planes for the duration of his long life.
Tevesh Szat
Tevesh Szat was a member of Urza’s Nine Titans. This band of powerful Planeswalkers were recruited to destroy Phyrexia. Urza predicted that the eventual betrayal of Tevesh Szat would come about by using the draconic Planeswalkers life to engineer Phyrexia’s downfall.
Ashiok
Ashiok is a very elegant nightmare who draws on fear in order to create twisted physical manifestations of every one of their victim's darkest dreams. The motives and origins of Ashiok are unknown. However, most who encounter this incredibly sinister being quickly come to the realisation that some mysteries are simply better left untouched.
